Family Camping Tents A – Z

Listed products

The charts include 2014 model lines, with notes on some of the products and best tent brands we’ve tested. You can find complete, searchable listings for the entire lines of all manufacturers in this issue at

Summer/screen (SU) Designed for maximum ventilation, these shelters withstand moderate rain and are best when you’re more concerned about bugs than bad weather. One of the best screen tents for camping is Coleman WeatherMaster Screened Tent. Three-season (3S) These tents are your best choice for most conditions, spring through fall, so called all weather tents. They have enough interior space for waiting out storms, plus the ventilation you need to stay cool on summer nights. Most can handle strong wind and rain, but not heavy snow loads.

Convertible (CV) This is a hybrid design that comes with pole, window, vestibule, and/or rainfly options so that you can strip the shelter down for summer trips, or strengthen it for stormy adventures.

Mountaineering (MT) With tough fabrics, sturdier pole structures, and external guy-points, these tents are built for winter’s strong wind and snow loads. Most have large vestibules to store cold-weather gear. Tarp (TA) This is exactly what it sounds like: waterproof fabric that you rig with cord, using trees or trekking poles for support. Shelter doesn’t get any lighter, but a tarp’s not much of a buffer against bugs.

A-frame (AF) Simple, tight, and often inexpensive, A-frame designs usually require staking. Headroom and elbowroom are limited because of sloping walls, and stability in strong winds can be shaky.

Longboard Makers And Their Best

Once you have decided to get a board, it’s just as vital to reflect on who made it as much as how well it is built or how it performs. By understanding the backstory behind every famous longboard brand, you’ll not only find your best longboards more interesting, but you’ll also discover the kind of dedication which their builders are putting into their gear.

Going from strength to strength, these storied longboard brands have brought entire new ranges of well-reviewed longboards over the years. Their best are built to last and to look and handle impressively, and they instill the confidence their riders need to handle fast or tricky moves on the go.

Arbor Axis Longboard Brand

These guys may not have the most famous name in the business, but their company has a long and varied history. They do bring to the market a line of great-riding and good-looking boards in terms of value. And their corporate marque isn’t just for looks. Their top people are committed to donating a slice of the profit from the sales of each of their product lines, to activist alliances who are committed to safeguarding forests as well as promoting environmentally sustainable production.

The company actually began as a snowboarding maker in the 1990s when longboarding had just begun to take off as a mainstream sport. The founders brought their dynamic knowledge in environment-friendly snowboarding design and manufacturing and put it into a novel range of balanced-performance longboards. Their launch models featured the then-unique capability to quickly carve downhill pavement, much like their snowboard models did on snowy slopes. Their snowboarding legacy helped to inspire entire new lines of boards created and built to readily mix cruise and trick moves. Continue reading →

Three Easy Methods to Cook Brown Rice

The tough bran around brown rice requires approximately forty-five minutes for liquid to penetrate it and be absorbed by the starch. Using the time it takes for liquid to absorb productively is easy. Place the rice in the oven with other ingredients such as shallots, garlic or tomatoes so that it cooks slowly while absorbing the flavors of the other ingredients.

Oven Brown Rice

Set the temperature for three-hundred and seventy-five degrees. Rinse the brown rice and drain it. Use a baking dish that is at least ten inches and add just over two cups of boiling stock for every cup of rice that was placed in the dish.

Dice tomatoes, onions, celery, garlic, and carrots to add to the rice in the baking dish. Thyme, rosemary, sage, fresh ground black pepper or cayenne pepper can also be added. You can add any spice you like to the brown rice before putting it into the oven.

A few tablespoons of oil or butter should be put into the rice prior to using aluminum foil to wrap the dish and placing it in the center of the oven. Leave for one hour, remove and fluff. Garnish with herbs and something crunchy to add texture to the dish.

Stove Top Brown Rice

If you cook brown rice on the stove, first place it in a colander and run water over it approximately five minutes or until the water runs clear. The rice will then need to be put in a pot that is ten inches wide. There should be a little bit more than twice as much stock or water as there is rice in the pan. There will be almost four times as much rice once it is cooked versus the amount of dry rice that was placed into the pot.

Add just enough salt to taste while stirring the rice, bring it to a simmer and reduce the heat to low. Use a lid that fits securely to cover the rice. Check to see if the rice is done after forty-five minutes. It should have an al dente consistency. If the rice is not fully cooked continue checking it every five minutes until it is done. Remove from heat, leave covered and allow to sit for five minutes. Fluff the rice and add the final touches while it is still hot.

It is even possible to cook brown rice in the microwave. Rinse the rice and place it in a three quart microwave dish with just over twice as much stock as rice. Add your seasonings, place the lid on and microwave until the liquid begins to bowl which is typically five minutes. Change the setting to medium and allow the rice to cook an additional thirty minutes. Remove from microwave, allow to stand for five minutes then use a fork to fluff.

No matter which way you decide to cook brown rice make sure to add the finishing touches like pats of butter, additional seasonings or nuts while it is still hot.

Benefits of Espresso Machine

Making espresso is not something you will just rush with and get the best results. The whole process requires attention for production of real espresso coffee. Passing super-hot water through tightly packed grounded coffee to produce the espresso with thick and dark brown color with small foam at home is the ultimate dream of every coffee lover. You want to get rid of those disappointing moments when you are driving around town and feel thirst for coffee, but on sacrificing to make a stopover and line then pay expensively, you are served with normal coffee; coffee that has not been prepared to your demand. Why don’t you try the benefits of having your own espresso machine so that you can treat yourself to plenty of carefully made coffee? Some of these benefits include:

Saves Money

This is highly applicable to “coffee addicts”. Those people who cannot go for a day without having a mug of coffee. Investing in this espresso machine has long-term money saving benefit. Trying adding up all the money you spend on mug of coffee every evening. Add on the money you spend on gas to drive to the coffee shop and then the extra cash you spend occasionally buying for a friend or an acquaintance a mug of coffee. Isn’t it enough to buy a coffee machine of your own? How much money will you save in 5 years when you just spend a fraction of what you spend at a coffee shop to make your own coffee at home? It is quite a fortune I suppose. All you require at home is the machine, hot water, the right coffee brand and a few minutes.

Saves Time

You can imagine being caught in traffic from a coffee shop. You will miss a lot to catch on compared to having an espresso machine at home. You can do some work on your laptop, catch an episode of the latest series or even do some house chores as you enjoy your mug of coffee at home. At the coffee shop, you are limited to just taking coffee of which you are likely to wait for some time before it is served.

Nothing feels good like having friends over for as much coffee as they want as you catch up on the latest happenings. It is a great way of entertaining your friends and making the best out of your time together. The moments are even greater compared to when you are just seated especially on colder evenings. In addition, if your household has more than one coffee lover, you will not have all of you leaving the home to have an evening cup of coffee. You can have it on your deck or couch. Having an espresso machine makes you limitless. You can take the coffee at any time you feel like and as express as it sounds.

Imagine waking up in the morning to drive to a coffee shop. It is the most inconveniencing thing that happens in the life of coffee lovers. Having the machine in the house is a sure way of saving your time. It is also a great way to stay up late and finish homework you carried from office or school.

As much as a coffee lover one may be, it definitely must turn out that you do not take coffee every single day. However, having the machine gives you a variety of options. If you want to have the coffee for entertainment, as a routine or for mornings, you can. Coffee shops do not offer such flexibility. Having the machine in the house allows you to enjoy coffee as desired. The basis of machines is to give you choices that soften life blows. Espresso machine is one comforting machine that will give you more years to live simply because of the stress it offloads from you.

If you are smart enough to learn the increasing trend of coffee drink shops, you will see the need to own your own coffee machine. The prices of coffee are not going to drop down any day soon. No one will start delivering affordable coffee to you any time you want to have it. No one will start fueling your car so that you can drive to coffee shops frequently. You will not get an extra 25th or 26th hour on you clock to waste at a coffee shop. The solution to all these problems lies in investing in a coffee machine.

Camping Tents

Before You Buy

Before you buy a tent you must first consider what purpose you need it for and how many people will be using the tent. You will find there are many different types of tents and must choose one that is specific to your needs. Below are some examples.

Backpacking tents – These are small, light and can be carried easily. They are perfect for hiking trips.

Weekend tents – These are large tents, perfect for a family weekend camping. They usually have a large living space and a porch area.

Pop-up tents – These are generally small tents, they are mostly used for festivals as they are cheap and easy to erect.

Setting Up Your Tent

– Once you have decided on the tent that will meet your needs and have purchased it, you must now learn to set it up.

– It is a good idea to practice setting up your tent before your camping trip. If you have space in your garden you can practice setting it up there, or perhaps in a local park.

– Find level ground. This is the best way to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep.

– Some people like to lay a tarp or groundsheet down before setting up the tent (if your tent doesn’t have an in-built groundsheet this is essential). This stops the tent from gathering moisture and also protects it from any stones that may damage the tent.

– Next you should lay out all the components of your tent. This allows you to find everything easily and also makes it easy to check that nothing is missing.

– You should then spread your tent out over your tarp or groundsheet, you can then make sure the entrance is in the correct place.

– Next you must connect all of your poles and place them on top of the tent. If you make sure each pole is in the correct position before inserting them into the tent you won’t have to take them out again which can be frustrating, particularly if it’s windy!

– Insert your poles into your tent, always push the poles in, never pull them. This ensures that the sections of the poles do not separate making it difficult to put up.

– Once all the poles are in you can raise your tent, most tents will have eyelets that the poles will slide in to which will keep the tent upright.

– You must now stake out your tent. Pull any guy lines tight and stake them to the ground, make sure they are secure by giving them a pull, if the stake comes out easily it needs to be adjusted.

Some Tips to Enjoy Camping

– Make sure your sleeping bag is appropriate for the season. It’s uncomfortable to sleep if you are too hot or too cold. A worst case scenario could mean getting hypothermia!

– Always keep the tent door zipped up. Otherwise you’ll be sharing your tent with bugs!

– Never light a fire or bring a barbecue close to your tent. Many tents will melt if exposed to heat and if the wind continually blows smoke into your tent you are at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Always ensure you camp a good distance away from your fire.

– Always bring enough food for the first night. If you arrive late or have trouble setting up you’ll be glad that you have food with you.

– Wear appropriate clothing. Remember you’ll be outside for the majority of the time and it may be unexpectedly cold. Always ensure you have plenty of layers so you can take of or put on clothes accordingly.

Going Home

– When dismantling your tent reverse the process you used for putting it up. Make sure you have all of your equipment and don’t leave anything behind.

– Make sure your fire is completely extinguished. Use plenty of water and make sure everything is cold before you leave.

– Leave no trace that you have been there! Don’t leave litter and cover up any trace of a fire with dirt.

Happy camping. (Back Space)

Ten years ago I joined a group of National Trust regional committee members who were visiting The Homewood, Esher, the 1939 house that its architect, Patrick Gwynne, who died on May 3, had then just offered them as a gift.

Above the impeccably modern spiral staircase hung a rather Fruity Murano glass chandelier. Surely, they said, this wasn’t part of the original furnishing, but it was. It is one of a number of deliberately incongruous items of furniture or fittings found in modern houses of the later 1930s, after the manner of Le Corbusier’s jokey penthouse for Charles de Beistegui in Paris.

You can call it surrealism, but maybe it is better described as camp. This is an area of discussion in modernist studies that tends to be neglected. If one takes Susan Sontag’s “Notes on Camp”, 1964 (collected in the book Against Interpretation) as a starting point, then camp can be allowed to be a serious aspect of the study of taste and style, and one that is particularly apt for discussing Gwynne’s personal contribution to modem architecture in Britain. “Camp taste”, wrote Sontag, “is above all, a mode of enjoyment, of appreciation — not judgment… Camp taste is a kind of love, love for human nature”.

Mindful of the defensive position that modernism has often had to maintain, commentators are perhaps afraid that using such a word will devalue their subject, and none of the recent newspaper obituaries of Gwynne more than hinted at it. He was what used to be called “a confirmed bachelor”, and thus an inference of camp might transgress the boundary into a well-guarded privacy.

Safe camping reminders

The bonfire blazed at an adjoining campsite, and Melisa, sitting on her father’s lap, sang her version of campfire songs. After “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “The Alphabet Song,” she yawned, stretched, then bolted upright and pointed to the sky. “Look, Daddy,” s exclaimed, “the stars have opened!” if you plan to sleep under the stars your next family vacation, you can take steps to help make it safe and healthy.

Study camping guides and travel brochures, with their enticing pictures of wooded hiking trails and serene lakes, and select an area with suitable activities for the whole family.

Prepare a camping checklist of everything you want to take with you. Include your doctor’s telephone number, prescriptions and medications, a first-aid kit, insect repellent, and sunscreen. Add a favorite toy or teddy bear for your child. Plan to take along your baby’s playpen. It can double as a crib at night. This permanent list can be updated each year as you add new equipment and as the family’s needs and interests change.

Pull out your checklist and start packing. Make cardboard sheaths to over the blades of kitchen knives, axes, and other sharp objects. Pack items into manageable sized loads and lift properly to protect your back. Secure items inside your vehicle so that they won’t become projectiles in case of a sudden stop. This is especially important if you are driving a van or a station wagon.

On arrival at your destination, select a campsite with care. Avoid high traffic areas such as near the entrance, bathrooms, swimming pool, camp store, or garbage dumpster. When camping with other families, try to get sites on the same side of the road. Excited children might not remember to look for cars when running back and forth between sites. Become familiar with the campground rules and regulations. Note their emergency procedures and the location of the nearest telephone.
